What is a 'Second Photographer'?

April 18, 2019

If you’re not in photographic community, you may see the phrase “second shooter” and think, huh? What is that that, and more commonly, why do I need one?

So here it goes! A second shooter is a “second photographer” which is… just that… a second photographer who works alongside the main photographer to capture an event. That being said, a second photographer is not just an assistant to carry the main photographers gear, they are there to help photograph the day from a different viewpoint and to offer maximum coverage of the day. I am incredibly lucky to work with many professional photographers who I second for and vice versa. A second photographers work will be line with the photographer's work who booked you as they will be trusted to photograph parts of the day on their own.

Documenting the day with two viewpoints is better than one! Together, we are able to capture more moments and give more variety. You’ve worked so hard and planned an incredible day that I don’t want anything to be missed! It’s impossible for me to be in more than one spot so having another set of eyes helps! I also often work as a second shooter so I fully appreciate how reassuring it is to have two people capturing the day. One can be taking portraits and the other can be taking reception details. They also come in handy as a backup for the occasional times that a wedding doesn't run to schedule so we have a shorter amount of time to capture all of those must have shots! As an example using the groomsmen photos above, during a winter wedding when we were battling against the early sunset, I was working as a second photographer for the fabulous Camilla Hards Photography and took the groomsmen off to get a few relaxed photographers whilst Camilla photographed the bride and bridesmaids.

Who do you chose?  I am super super fortunate to be surrounded by so many talented 'togs' who love to work with one another! Pretty amazing, right? I choose someone whose style is similar to my own (light, bright, airy, natural.....), someone I trust, and someone who I know will treat my clients as I would! I’m not just picking a random person off the street with an camera phone and zero experience!

What photos does the other photographer take? So whilst I am shooting the set of morning prep my second would be shooting the other. During the rest of the wedding, we work together to get different angles… almost mirror each other at times so we’re getting the opposite of what the other is shooting! We don’t just stand in the same spot and get the same thing as that wouldn't make sense! We work together to achieve more variety in the same situation. My colleague may spot a moment that I don’t and vice versa! It’s great to have another perspective and set of eyes on the wedding so we can fully capture the whole wedding story!
