What is a 'Second Photographer'?

If you’re not in photographic community, you may see the phrase “second shooter” and think, huh? What is that that, and more commonly, why do I need one?

So here it goes! A second shooter is a “second photographer” which is… just that… a second photographer who works alongside the main photographer to capture an event. That being said, a second photographer is not just an assistant to carry the main photographers gear, they are there to help photograph the day from a different viewpoint and to offer maximum coverage of the day. I am incredibly lucky to work with many professional photographers who I second for and vice versa. A second photographers work will be line with the photographer's work who booked you as they will be trusted to photograph parts of the day on their own.

Documenting the day with two viewpoints is better than one! Together, we are able to capture more moments and give more variety. You’ve worked so hard and planned an incredible day that I don’t want anything to be missed! It’s impossible for me to be in more than one spot so having another set of eyes helps! I also often work as a second shooter so I fully appreciate how reassuring it is to have two people capturing the day. One can be taking portraits and the other can be taking reception details. They also come in handy as a backup for the occasional times that a wedding doesn't run to schedule so we have a shorter amount of time to capture all of those must have shots! As an example using the groomsmen photos above, during a winter wedding when we were battling against the early sunset, I was working as a second photographer for the fabulous Camilla Hards Photography and took the groomsmen off to get a few relaxed photographers whilst Camilla photographed the bride and bridesmaids.

Who do you chose?  I am super super fortunate to be surrounded by so many talented 'togs' who love to work with one another! Pretty amazing, right? I choose someone whose style is similar to my own (light, bright, airy, natural.....), someone I trust, and someone who I know will treat my clients as I would! I’m not just picking a random person off the street with an camera phone and zero experience!

What photos does the other photographer take? So whilst I am shooting the set of morning prep my second would be shooting the other. During the rest of the wedding, we work together to get different angles… almost mirror each other at times so we’re getting the opposite of what the other is shooting! We don’t just stand in the same spot and get the same thing as that wouldn't make sense! We work together to achieve more variety in the same situation. My colleague may spot a moment that I don’t and vice versa! It’s great to have another perspective and set of eyes on the wedding so we can fully capture the whole wedding story!

Whimsical Chic Wedding Casey and Dan had one of the most personal and beautiful wilderness wedding celebrations I have ever witnessed. The intimate ceremony at St Mary Magdalene - Great Burstead followed by a charming back garden tipi reception at Casey's beautiful family home.

Casey had the most incredible eye for detail and executed her vision perfectly - there were stunning hand crafted cocktails by a talented mixologist team, a stunning horse cart serving pimm's in mason jars, haystacks around a fire pit, afternoon tea, stunning flowers hanging from the tree branches and an abundance of the most beautiful floral creations by the talent Hannah Louise of Hannah Louise Flowers. Guests tucked into succulent Lamb and Halloumi Kebabs from Garlic & Olive and for dessert enjoyed the fabulous cake creations from Devora Cake Company - the carrot cake was to die for! After everyone was well fed and the fabulous speeches were finished the cocktails continued to flow whilst everyone danced the night away to a live band. It truly was a phenomenal day and I wish Casey & Dan every happiness for the future!

Mr & Mrs Harris | Red Brick Barn Terry & Alexandra's wedding was utterly beautiful;  it took place on a warm sunny Saturday in a quaint 17th century grade II listed building situated in the Sutton Hall Farm.

Their wedding ceremony took place in the venue's Red Brick Barn with the reception moving a couple of hundred yards onto the green where there was a marquee as well as incredible family entertainment for the lucky guests. With a Hog Roast wedding breakfast that was seriously fantastic (the stuffing was the best I had ever tasted!) and an ice cream van which provided a welcomed sugar kick everyone was then ready to party into the night.

It was a stylish, laid back wedding with a besotted bride and groom, the most beautiful and polite flower girls and a chocolate feast like you have never scene. What more could you ask?

Autumn Woodland Walk - Sunday 23rd October 2016 A tad behind with all of my blogging from August 2016 until January 2017 however I just had to share these images from a relaxed family session. We try to keep all of our sessions as informal as possible from climbing trees to running through muddy puddles - nothing fazes us!

Salthouse Harbour Hotel - 27th August - Mr & Mrs Scarlett Wow - before I start, what a beautiful location this was! Now this wasn't a job as such as for once I was actually a guest at a wedding (I know, it felt odd, I was walking about in my rollers not knowing what to do with myself!)  However, the official photographer for the day was with the bride during her preparations so I was asked if I wouldn't mind capturing just a few photos of the men getting ready which of course I jumped at! It was lovely being able to be a small part of their big day but also it was amazing to be a guest and be fully present to witness two fantastic friends make their vows to each other ( was also pretty amazing to be able to drink prosecco as I wasn't on duty!). I even left my camera equipment at the hotel so I couldn't be tempted! Here are just a few of the snaps the morning of the wedding....

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside! At 9am last Saturday instead of my usual lazy morning editing with a coffee or frantically rushing around before a wedding (August is the month of weddings after all!) I had the rare opportunity to squeeze in a few family beach sessions that had been postponed from July due to the bizarre weather we had been having. Fun was had by all as we climbed over divides, explored the beach huts and dipped our toes in the sea !
